Jian Wu, a graduate of the prestigious Art College of Qing Hua University (formerly known as the Central Art and Crafts College of China), specialized in sculpture and mural art during his undergraduate studies. His early works predominantly comprised sculptures and copper reliefs commissioned by China's five-star hotels. These designs were showcased in numerous national art exhibitions in China. For his graduate studies, Jian pursued a major in Illustration and earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Art University. Prior to completing his studies, he became a faculty member at the university. With over 25 years of experience, Jian dedicated himself to teaching painting and drawing at institutions such as the Academy of Art University and later at Ohlone College in Fremont. Presently, Jian has transitioned into a full-time artist, focusing on his studio art and conducting studio workshops. Throughout his career, he has held solo exhibitions and participated in various group shows, earning numerous awards in nationwide professional art exhibitions and competitions. Jian is recognized as a master member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society (NOAPS) and a signature member of Oil Painters of America. His expertise extends to the literary realm as well. Jian authored "Pastel Technique," published by China Youth Press, and his oil painting collection, "The Overseas Oil Painter of China—Jian Wu," was published by Tianjin People’s Fine Arts Publishing House, a renowned publisher in China. Jian's artistic endeavors have gained international recognition, with his works being collected throughout the United States and around the world.
Jian Wu has had many accomplishments in his career: he is a Master Artist with NOAPS, has won two Exceptional Merit Awards from the International Portrait Competition; NOAPS awards including a Best of Show, Third Place, Best Use of Light and Color (twice) and Best Portrait Award. He has also won accolades for his pastel work, winning First, Second, and Third place awards in the Pastel Journal ‘Pastel 100 Competition’. But for Jian, his most prized accomplishment has been the development of his own personal style of painting. Jian leaves us with a quote from Winston Churchill: “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” To relate to painting, Jian says: “I believe that those of us who play with colors can paint our way out of any ‘hell’ if we persist”.
