Very Rare Alcohol: Sandy Macdonald's Ye Ancient Highland Malt Liqueur Whisky. Recently sold at auction for $1,682 USD, this bottle of whisky is a phenomenal piece of Scotch whisky history. Containing whisky dating back to 1923, it includes contributions from distilleries that have long since disappeared. This extremely rare blend was produced under the Sandy Macdonald label by Macdonald Greenlees, featuring whiskies exclusively from the following distilleries: Glendullan-Glenlivet, Stronachie, Auchinblae, and Argyll. Of these, only Glendullan remains in operation today. The back label "guarantees" that the whiskies are of "pre-war quality and strength". While the exact strength is not stated, this likely places the bottling in the late 1940s to early 1950s. With a capacity of 26 ½ ounces—a charming and quaint detail—the bottle shows some wear to the label but remains in excellent condition for its age. Please note that all spirits are sold for collection by specialized carriers. * Disclaimer for Sale of Antique Alcohol: This bottle is sold solely as a collectible item and is not intended for consumption. The contents are over 100 years old and may no longer be suitable for drinking. The buyer and seller assume all responsibility for any risks associated with consuming the contents. Sandy Macdonald, Belonging to Macdonald Greenlees, it became one of DCL’s admixed brands whereby Scotch malt whisky (or in one case Irish pot still whiskey) was blended with Canadian grain spirit in order to get round Canadian protectionist measures of the 1930’s. Sandy Macdonald, with 40% malt content, was the best of the bunch. These brands were not sold in Britain at that time but were aimed at the lower end of the Canadian market. It may also have had a role during Prohibition. However, as a blend Sandy Macdonald is said to date back to 1840 when it came into existence with the setting up of Alexander and Williams, as whisky merchants in Edinburgh. This eventually became Macdonald, Greenlees and Williams (Distillers) Ltd., subsequently falling to DCL ownership in 1925. The company remained a significant DCL subsidiary for many years but, along with the brand, has quietly disappeared from the market under current Diageo marketing strategies.
