Antique Bronze Metal Art Sculpture Plaque Diana The Huntress & Her Hound Dog. This small high relief antique bronze metal art plaque measures only 4" wide, but possesses a great amount of high relief detail. This round bronze plaque of Diana The Huntress, along with her hound / dog is not signed, nor does it have a foundry mark that I can find. There is a stamped number "2" on the knob that protrudes from the back, and on the brass backplate. No other marks on the piece that I can find. The brass backplate is easily separated from the bronze medallion, with just your fingers. I feel that this could have been attached to a larger plaque, possibly a wooden one, that would have acted as the frame to this, but I am unsure. It could have also been made to attach to a fireplace mantle surround, or to a piece of furniture. As I say, I am not sure, and can only guess as to how it was meant to be displayed. The close-up photos can better describe the details of the piece better than my typing. The only other thing that I would like to add is that there was what I think were gold vermeil highlights in the low relief background of the scene, I assume to make the high relief details stand-out better, but some of this gold vermeil highlighting has been worn/washed away over time, especially from the upper half of the plaque. *Our job is to find and target great art by collecting a vast array of contemporary, vintage, antique and collectible items from across the globe. Diana, was the goddess of the hunt, the moon, and nature in Roman mythology, associated with wild animals and woodland, and having the power to talk to and control animals. She was equated with the Greek goddess Artemis,[1] though she had an independent origin in Italy.
Diana was known as the virgin goddess of childbirth and women. She was one of the three maiden goddesses, along with Minerva and Vesta, who swore never to marry. Oak groves and deer were especially sacred to her. Diana was born with her twin brother, Apollo, on the island of Delos, daughter of Jupiter and Latona. She made up a triad with two other Roman deities: Egeria the water nymph, her servant and assistant midwife; and Virbius, the woodland god.
Diana is revered in Roman Neopaganism and Stregheria.
