Antique early 19th century, hand carved Chinese smiling Mask with missing lower jaw of the mouth. Wooden hand carved theater mask in a dark natural patina with carved out eyes, with red human hair. The design and the position of the eyes and mouths give the feeling of a real strong presence. It is likely that this mask has never been repainted and shows it original brown and black patina with important areas exhibiting natural patina of use, which is rather unusual for Chinese masks. The piece is approximately 150 years old, and is in great condition, except a break in the chin.
