"Half Full" is a 29" x 41" painted paper collage and mixed media piece on board created by artist Brenda Holzke. My approach to mixed media is an evolving journey that I like to call "organized chaos." Each panel develops through the addition of multiple layers using various materials, always leaving room for glimpses of underlying elements. The process involves a continuous cycle of editing, involving destruction and resurrection, leading to the final commitment that I share with my audience. I draw a direct parallel between the art-making process and life itself. The more I attempt to control the creative journey, the more challenging it becomes. In my artistic practice, I embrace the necessity of challenging my methods and exploring different mediums. Whether I'm working with paint or clay, I maintain a constant state of rebellion, pushing the boundaries of each medium at every stage of creation. In my sculptures, this exploration visually references indigenous and geological processes. These influences contribute to both the surface and form of my pieces, creating a fusion of primitive and modern expressions. Ultimately, my art is a reflection of the dynamic relationship between control and chaos, mirroring the complexities of life's journey.
My purpose in creating artworks is to connect. I cannot do this without honesty, clarity and trust. Letting go of self- limiting beliefs, expectations and unlimited mind chatter is a process. My goal is to lose control. The intention is to communicate through my heart and not my head.
