A sought after coin in Japan. This coin is a 1 Rin coin, the face value of the coin is 1/1000 of a yen. Only one design of this coin was minted from 1873 - 1884. The diameter is 15.75 mm and the weight is 0.91 grams. There is an Imperial crest on the front and the denomination on the back. After the Meiji Revolution, the Japanese Government underwent a currency overhaul thanks to the heavily biased Treaty of Amity and Commerce 1858 that led to the near draining of Japanese gold bullion into America. The Japanese Government needed to reform their currency. This coin and the half sen coin were proposed for issuance in 1871. Initially rejected for circulation, they were once again proposed and accepted in 1873 due to public pressure for low denomination coinage. The old currency was used for hundreds of years during the Edo Period. The Ryo system was as follows Oban = 10 Ryo, Koban = 1 Ryo, 1 Ryo = 40 Tenpo Tsuhou, 1 Ryo = 4 Bu Gold or 4 Bu Silver, 1 Bu Silver = 1 Shu Silver, 1 Bu Gold = 8 Shu Gold or 500 Mon Gold, 1 Shu = 250 Mon. The new system has a more Western weight conversion and was 1 yen = 100 sen, 1 sen = 10 rin. 16,109,300 coins were minted that year.
