In 1871 Japan changed its currency system from the old ryo based system to a new yen based currency. The coins had a rising sun and a dragon on the back. A second generation Japanese silver coin with minor design modifications from the original 1871 design. Slightly smaller in diameter than the original and has two different dragon designs. This coin has the small dragon which has three spines between the flames. This design was only issued for one year. 2,648,309 coins were issued that year including the other large dragon design. Diameter: 31 mm, 80% Silver 20% copper, weight 12.5 g.
