A beautiful very large rectangle malachite stone box. I am completely in love with this piece. The flawless execution by the master Italian lapidary has created the illusion of a seamless block of Malachite with incredible patterning - the inlay seams are literally invisible. Malachite from the 18th and 19th century, was sourced from Russia. Boxes, such as this, were typically brought back from Europe as "Grand Tour" souvenirs. Malachite natural designs are created by slicing a stalactite to reveal its interior patterning. When the stone is discovered, Malachite designs with strong patterning are highly prized.
