Oregon Edge, Evening by artist Howard Rackliffe, American, 1917-1987. Abstract seascape painting by renowned American abstract landscape artist, Howard Rackliffe. Striking, gestural rhythms make this a powerful piece. Signed, titled work with the date of completion noted was inspired by and dedicated to a friend moving from New England to the West Coast. Piece was exhibited at a retrospective of the artist's work in Connecticut. The acrylic on board painting is mounted under glass and attractively framed in contemporary brushed chrome. If desired, statement of provenance in private collection and past appraisal can be provided. Howard Rackliffe’s paintings are infused with passion and a gestural immediacy. Landscape elements are reduced to strong, basic forms that are constructed with a bold directness. Rackliffe’s painting style shares the same response to nature and its organic impulses, as represented in the tradition of landscape painting established by such American artists as Marsden Hartley, Arthur Dove and John Marin. His works have been featured in one-person exhibitions at the Todd Gallery, NY; the New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; and the Caldbeck Gallery, ME., and in group exhibitions at the Virginia Museum, Richmond, VA; Jacques Seligmann Gallery, NY; and the Ringling Museum, Sarasota, FL. He was one of eight artists featured in the “8 From Connecticut” exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum in 1960 which also included Cleve Gray and Bernard Chaet. His work was the focus of a retrospective exhibition in 1990 at the New Britain Museum of American Art, CT. which traveled to the Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, ME. Rackliffe’s works are represented in the collections of the Barnes Foundation, Merion, PA; Columbia University, NY; New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; Portland Museum of Art, ME; the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, MA and the Farnsworth Museum, ME.
