István Orosz is a Hungarian painter, printmaker, graphic designer, and animated film director. He is best known for his mathematically inspired works, featuring impossible objects, optical illusions, double-meaning images, and anamorphoses, often compared to the art of M. C. Escher. Orosz studied at the Hungarian University of Arts and Design (now the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) in Budapest. After graduating in 1975, he began working in theater as a stage designer and in animation as both an animator and film director. He is currently a film director at PannóniaFilm Studio in Budapest and a professor at the University of West Hungary in Sopron. A regular participant in major international biennials of poster and graphic art, Orosz has exhibited his work in both solo and group exhibitions across Hungary and abroad. He is the co-founder of the Hungarian Poster Association and a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) as well as the Hungarian Academy of Arts. Over the course of his career, Orosz has published several books and received numerous prestigious international awards. These include Best Script at the 1st KAFF Animated Film Festival, the Gold Medal at the Biennial of Graphic Design in Brno, First Prize at the International Poster Biennial in Lahti, the Icograda Prize at the International Poster Show in Chaumont, and the Gold Medal at the Annual Exhibition of the Society of Illustrators in New York. *** Our step-by-step process connects you with an artist or a photographer, who can create an original print in their unique style. István Orosz’s poster art stands out for its fusion of mathematical precision and visual poetry, where technique and imagination intertwine to create images that challenge perception. Drawing on principles of geometry, perspective, and anamorphosis, he often hides multiple layers of meaning within a single composition—so that what appears ordinary at first glance reveals illusions, double images, or hidden portraits upon closer inspection. His technique reflects both the discipline of a designer and the curiosity of a visual philosopher, turning posters into puzzles that invite the viewer to look again and again. This blend of intellectual rigor and artistic playfulness is what makes his work extraordinary and places him among the most innovative poster artists of his generation.
