This painting is part of the 'Mercury' series. In the painting 'Calderas' I am playing with both flattening the surface and creating an abstracted landscape / lightscape. Light floats behind and in front the imaginary black as coal galaxy. The work is influenced by the flat colors and text balloons of comic books. I began to abstract them from the inside out. Literally inverting the image down the middle like you might attempt splitting a piece pf paper down the center through its core. I exaggerate the effect, creating a painting in which composition is more important than content. By mixing metallic paints with oils & acrylic, I am further able to dramatize the aerial feeling, the floating effect, letting them shine in an eye popping arena before the black plane.

Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities; which includes the creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences, but in modern usage the fine arts, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, are distinguished from acquired skills in general, and the decorative or applied arts.
