In the painting 'The Past Before Me,' I play with both flattening the surface and creating an abstracted landscape/lightscape. Light floats both behind and in front of the imaginary, coal-black galaxy. The work draws inspiration from the flat colors and text balloons found in comic books. I began to abstract them from the inside out, literally inverting the image down the middle, as if attempting to split a piece of paper through its core. I exaggerate this effect, creating a painting where composition takes precedence over content. By blending metallic paints with oils and acrylics, I further dramatize the aerial feeling and floating effect, allowing them to shine in an eye-popping arena before the black plane.
The history of contemporary abstraction is a dynamic journey through the evolving expressions of artistic freedom and experimentation. Rooted in the early 20th century, abstraction sought to break away from representational art, pushing boundaries and challenging traditional norms. Artists like Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich paved the way with their bold use of geometric forms and non-representational compositions. As time progressed, abstract expressionism emerged, embracing spontaneity and the emotional intensity of the artist's gestures. The movement further diversified with the advent of minimalism, introducing simplicity and precision. From the vibrant color fields of Mark Rothko to the conceptual explorations of artists like Yayoi Kusama, contemporary abstraction continues to be a fertile ground for innovation, reflecting the ever-changing landscape of artistic thought and expression.
